Dirt, Debris, and Oily Skin
Often, skin types tend to vary quite a bit. Many of us were born with naturally oily skin, that keeps us from having the bright, beautiful complexion we strongly desire and leads to a variety of skincare issues including acne, clogged pores and other skincare issues.
While most patients with oily skin and clogged pores are a products of genetics, there are also a number of environmental factors as well as poor skin care habits that can lead to such issues, including:
- Lack of cleansing, exfoliating and poor hygiene.
- Poor skincare habits.
- A diet full of fatty, greasy foods.
- Hormonal changes (often triggered by life events such as pregnancy or puberty)
- Use of certain creams and ointments along the skin.
Hormones are often one of the biggest contributors to oily skin and clogged pores, the hormones responsible are called androgens. Androgens are a male hormone, present in both men and women, that signal the body about the maturation of sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands produce an oil known as sebum, a natural moisturizing oil for the body.
As it sits on the skin’s surface, it tends to get caught in the pores, causing a number of issues. Once the oil is present it allows bacteria, dirt and debris from the atmosphere to become stuck to the skin and eventually end up clogging the pores.
The combination of oils, environmental dirt/debris, dead skin cells, and bacteria clog the pores wreaking havoc on your once perfect complexion. Leading to:
- Infections along the skin’s surface
Deep Pore Cleansing Options
For those patients with severely oily skin, and pores full of dirt and debris, the team at the Skin Center New York offers a variety of different treatment options, including:
- Deep Pore Cleansing Extractions
A facial extraction is the process of clearing out the clogged or compacted pores using both the hands, as manual or instruments, as a mechanical method. Extractions are often performed as part of a facial. Most people need at least a couple of extractions during each facial, though you may require more extractions if this is your first facial. Comedones (blackheads) are the most common reason for extraction. A blackhead is not necessarily “dirt in the pores” as many people think. It is a pore that has become clogged with excess sebum and dead skin cells. The dark spot which is visible on the surface of the skin is oil which has oxidized and darkened on exposure to the air, like when you slice an apple and allow it to sit out for a while. Pustules and pimples can also be extracted, depending on their size and depth. This often requires the use of a lancet to gently lift and remove the very top layer of the pustule to allow the contents to be easily extracted.
- Ultrasonic Deep Pore Cleansing
The Ultrasonic is a revolutionary device that allows us to remove blackheads, whiteheads, and other general dirt, debris and bacteria that may be clogging our pores. The Ultrasonic works through the use of ultrasonic soundwaves, which create a series of vibrations along the skin – this helps to loosen up dead skin cells, dirt, oils and debris. The Ultrasonic offers patients the same high level of exfoliation as other treatments, but is far gentler on the face and works best on “flatter” areas of the face like the chin, cheeks, and forehead.
- Deep Pore Detoxifying Mask
At the Skin Center, we offer a number of amazing facials, masks and peels that can help patients to treat a number of different skincare issues. The detoxifying mask helps provide patients the high level of detoxification they need, by coating the skin’s surface, absorbing oils, dirt, debris and bacteria from the skin’s surface as well as the inner pores! Not only does this mask help to purge the pores of unwanted gunk, but it also fights free radicals, to completely detox the face of unwanted toxins. Leaving patients with cleaner, more clear, overall healthier skin!
- LED Light Treatments
LED treatments have become a recent favorite amongst skincare practitioners, as they allow us to rejuvenate and restore the skin, without the need for more invasive measures. The LED light is emitted into the skin’s surface at different wavelengths, depending on the patient’s skin tone or color. These lights send waves throughout the inner layers of the skin, to trigger different reactions, killing bacteria, stimulate cellular regeneration and helping to remove unwanted dirt, debris, and oils from within our pores!
